
After taking part in Ludum Dare 47 with work colleagues, i decided i wanted to try out taking part in a jam on my own. Around this time i had been playing The Medium and Control, and had the idea for something that combined the SCP inspired story of Control with a more explicitly psychological horror based plot.
A vague plot for ONI began to take shape and i decided this would be a good candidate for the jam. Id long ago seen a tech demo of portals in the unity engine and had always wanted to try implementing this myself but had never found the time. As such i decided to make portal mechanics and visuals a big feature of the jam, having the player travel and back and forth between 2 versions of the same environment set at different points in time.

The game also featured a deal of environmental story telling and old school “find x to open y” puzzles to gate progression, requiring the player to engage with the story in order to pick up on key information required to progress in the game itself.
